Uwharries Gravel Roads

There are 40 miles of gravel roads in the Uwharries National Forest. I’d like to check them out to see what they are like. This day trip route explores some of the more heavily bikes sections. It may take a second trip for me to check out all 40 miles of trails.

Where to Park

Looking at Strava for planning this route, it looks like a lot of cyclists start at this location (Hunt Camp), so this is what I’m going to try.

Description

I plan to take my mountain bike on this one, as I don’t know what these trails will be like. The web site says they are shared trails with horses, hikers, and ATV’s. It doesn’t look like there is any water in this area. I’ll probably just carry an extra water bottle or bring a water filter and take from a stream. From the link on Strava you can see that my plan is to do 19 miles (about half) of trails and 2,200 ft of climbing. Depending how I feel, I may extend it a little. I’ll definitely bring a map, in case I need it. It might be rather easy to get lost on the numerous trails in this area.
