Day #21 & #22 Van Build – 6/14/25

On Friday the 13th of June, I was busy with a class all day and only spent 20 minutes with Artie gluing down the 2nd piece of subfloor plywood. So, not much work completed, but at least we got the 2nd sheet down as it takes 24 hours for the glue to cure. Unfortunately, the middle pillar in the walls prevented us from using the biscuits on the joint between the 1st and 2nd sections of subfloor. Tomorrow will be a much longer day, and will involve biscuits.

On Saturday the 14th, I started the work day by re-routing the Ford wiring harness. I had kept it in it’s plastic moulding, but after bolting on the unistrut where it will go, it was clear to me that the Ford wiring harness has to be routed up toward the ceiling of the van. Also, in the back of the van, I wanted that Ford wiring harness to be routed up toward the ceiling as well. I needed to re-route this harness today, because it was in my way for wrapping the columns in the back of the van. So, I removed the plastic moulding and dozens of plastic clips that were holding the harness to the wall of the van. Here are before and after pictures.

Then to continue to prep the rear columns for wrapping with fabric, I had to cover up some of the larger holes. There were two places for overhead lights that I covered up with a bent piece of aluminum flashing material and some spray adhesive. It’s hard to tell from these before and after pictures, but the Ford wiring harness is up higher in the back of the van as well. I just used zip ties to hold it up for now. I’ll do something more permanent with the harness later.

There was also a couple of spots in the bottom of the rear column that had a large opening that had to be covered up. Again, I used aluminum flashing material and spray adhesive.

On the front columns of the van, I wrapped them with only the vinyl fabric, because the width that I had to wrap was rather small. But here on the back, I’m wrapping a column that is about six inches wide. So, I wanted to put some insulation underneath the fabric. So, I first wrapped the column with a 1/8″ Landau foam padding material. Then I wrapped the vinyl fabric on top of the Landau padding.

I used a long piece of aluminum extrusion and a utility knife to cut out the Landau padding and vinyl to the width that I needed.

Here is what the rear columns looked like after gluing the Landau padding to them. You can see that I had to take the weatherstripping off of the back of the door frame. I’m using a couple of clamps to prevent the weatherstripping from completely coming off the door frame.

Then I repeated the same process for the vinyl fabric. I trimmed the excess material and then I re-installed the weatherstripping around the rear door. Here is the final result.

I took a break for lunch, then Elizabeth helped me to glue down the final two pieces of subfloor plywood. Sorry, but no pictures of that. We were able to use the biscuits to join these pieces to their neighboring plywood sheets. Those will cure for 24 hours. I’m not working on the van tomorrow, as it’s Father’s Day. So, I’ll see what the floor looks like on Monday morning. For the day, I put in about four hours of work.
