Day # 5 Van Build – 5/17/25

I was hoping to install the MaxxAir fan this morning, but rain showers forced that to be postponed for one day. Instead, we worked inside the van and completed the rest of the insulation work that was started on Day #2. At least the rain gave me a leak test on the two holes I put in the van yesterday, and both were dry. So, good news there.

Insulation is boring to write about, but necessary for the van. I started working by myself and stuffed insulation inside the overhead beams. It was a very tight fit, but I was fortunate that Pat had lent me a wire snake tool that I could use for the insulation. That tool made it much easier. I tightened a cable tie around one end of a strip of insulation and used the wire snake tool to pull the strip of insulation into the beam. No adhesive needed for this part, as it was a tight fit.

Then I removed the clips that were holding the back of the van headliner. As I separated the headliner material from the sheet metal of the van, Artie applied sound deadening and insulation to that area. We applied as much adhesive to the insulation as we could but really the headliner will hold the insulation. I reattached the headliner clips.

Then Artie and I used the wire snake to thread insulation into the horizontal beams in the two van walls. My experience doing the ceiling beams helped here, and it didn’t take too long to complete this section. It really helped to have Artie to help. Then we finished adding insulation to the bottom of the wall on the driver’s side of the van. We hadn’t completed that section on Day #2, so we did it today.

After lunch, I worked on my own to apply insulation to the ceiling of the van. I couldn’t do the bay where we were going to install the MaxxAir fan tomorrow, but I did the rest of the ceiling. Finally, I applied insulation to the rear beams of the van. Overall, I spent five hours working on the insulation today and Artie helped me for half of that time. No pictures, as the black backing on the insulation doesn’t show up well against the dark blue color of the sheet metal. I think it looks awesome, though.

I’ll get some pictures tomorrow of the MaxxAir Fan install.
