Spent a couple of days off of the bike with the Gilbert’s. Gordy and Pat were gracious hosts. They are great cooks and I definitely put back on some of the weight I had lost.
They shared a lot of stories about Lena as a kid and I told them several about Alex. It was interesting to hear about the ways those two were similar and different as kids. They showed me pictures of Lena as a kid, which I enjoyed seeing. We drove around town and saw where Lena went to school and church as well as her first house.
There are Amish in this part of Indiana and on Saturday we drove around a little. We went out to lunch at an Amish restaurant and visited an Amish grocery store.
They were watching their granddaughter Hazel on Friday and Saturday. It was a joy to get to know her.
On Sunday morning, I went to church and Sunday school with Gordy and Pat at Trinity church. The sermon by Pastor Brooks was very well done and used the book of Daniel to teach about how to be a Christian in a secular society. I found it very thought provoking. After church was Sunday school, which was a class of about 50 people. I was introduced to the class and told them all about my bike tour and some of my impressions about the experience so far. They were interested and asked several questions as well. They promised to pray for me, and I left them my blog information so that they could follow my adventures and stay in touch. It was such an uplifting experience.
My first morning at the Gilbert’s. I was thinking about going to urgent care about my congestion, because it was in my ears and I was afraid that it would continue to get worse. I was also worried about being seen by a doctor before the long holiday weekend. Pat wisely suggested that I use telemedicine. I had never used that service, even though it is offered by my health insurance company. It was a little clunky, but I was able to have a video call with a doctor who prescribed me some better decongestant medicine and told me to call them back in three to five days if it gets worse. The doctor said I was okay to continue biking. I was feeling better after the two days at the Gilbert’s and am looking forward to continuing my journey tomorrow.
It was a pleasure to have you in our home.
