Day #4 (5/10/24) – Bike Across America

I decided to write a blog post today after all. Maybe because I’m bored of being stuck in a hotel room on this rainy day. 🙂

I’ll share some Q&A from talking to family and friends.

Q: How are your legs and ass feeling?

A: My legs are fine. They are tired at the end of the day’s riding, but not sore at all. My sit bones feel good. I’ve been wearing a thin tri-short under the hiking shorts I’m wearing, and I think it’s helped a lot. I’ve also made some small adjustments to the saddle to improve my comfort.

Q: I saw you went with the bigger foldable sleeping pad. Any reason for that over your smaller inflatable one?

A: I’m not using it for a sleeping pad. I am carrying my usual inflatable sleeping pad. The foldable one serves as a fender, makes it harder for someone to remove my panniers (if they wanted to steal one), and I use it for an exercise mat if I need to.

Q: Can you put a link to your blog from the home page of your website? Then it will be easier to get to.

A: Done.

Q: I think I left a comment, but I don’t see it anywhere. Did I do something wrong?

A: It’s probably me. I have to approve the comments before they are visible – this mostly prevents spam comments. I look for new comments a few times a day, but there will be a delay. Remember, blog comments can be seen by everyone. You can text me if you only want me to see it.

Q: What have you learned from your first three days?

A: I have been keeping a journal of the things that have gone well and poorly. I am improving every day!! The most frustrating issue has been my cell phone battery life. The navigation app seems to really drain the battery – more than I expected. I’m still playing around with different apps and turning off things on my cellphone that are draining the battery. I have a good battery backup, so it hasn’t been a problem – just annoying.

A: I’ve also realized that I brought too much food for this part of the trip. Food is readily available and I’m carrying too much. My food could be better organized, and I’ll fix that on a future off-day.

A: I find it hard to accomplish my normal daily routine activities (exercising, stretching, taking vitamins, meditation, etc.) when I’m biking. I need to work on my self discipline to do these and create a routine that I can stick to. Starting tomorrow!!

Q: What are you doing on your day off?

A: Mostly I’ve been reading a book by Giovanni Dienstmann called “Wise Confidence”. It’s a self help book by an author that I really like. Lots of thought provoking exercises that are perfect for a quiet day.

A: I’ve been taking breaks from my book to do my normal daily routine, wash my clothes, make a plan for tomorrow’s bike ride, and write this blog post.

That’s all for today. I love all the comments, text messages and phone calls!! Keep them coming, as it helps keep my spirits high. More biking tomorrow.
