Day #71 Van Build – 9/5/25

I put two coats of the finishing oil on the top and sides of the butcher block counter yesterday. This morning I put a first coat on the bottom. I’ll put a second coat on the bottom before I go to bed tonight. I also put a coat of Minwax paste on the three boards that will be seen on the outside of the galley.

With all those boards in the garage curing, I was limited in what I could do the rest of the day. I couldn’t use the garage, and I didn’t want to make any sawdust while the boards dryed/cured. So, I came up with a number of items to do for the galley that were inside the van. I started by planning out the fold down table that will be at the back of the galley. This table will fold down and out of the van when the sliding door is open (which it will be when I’m camping somewhere). I measured how big to make the boards and listed out the hardware that I needed to purchase the next time I’m at the hardware store.

Then I set the location of the two brackets that will be used to bolt the galley to the unistrut. I marked where I need to drill the holes into the aluminum extrusion, but didn’t drill them out yet. I didn’t want to make any shavings today.

I did some work on the wiring for the galley. I wired up the 120V outlet that will be above the counter and the 12V outlet that will be above that. I then ran the necessary wires into the galley that will power the second 120V outlet, the water pump, the refrigerator, and the floor lighting strip. With all the wires run into the galley, I can work on modifying and installing the large wall panel that goes behind the galley. But that is for another day, because of the sawdust I’ll create making those modifications to the wall panel. Here is a picture of the wiring I did today.

Finally, I installed the overhead fan that sits above the galley and is mounted in the ceiling. You may have seen the wires coming out of the ceiling in earlier pictures. I decided to install that today, as it will be good to have more airflow inside the van on hot days while I’m working. Once I get the wall panel installed, I’ll be able to turn on that circuit and have this fan running while I’m working. Here is a picture of it in the ceiling mount.

I had to stop today at lunchtime for other items on my schedule. But at least I got a few things done.
