Day #24 Van Build – 6/17/25

I was working alone today. Spent two hours in the morning working on the horizontal furring strips on the passenger side wall. I was able to cut all the lengths of wood, and drill and paint all the holes needed for rivnuts (about 20). Then I had a couple of meetings/errands. I came back in the afternoon for three more hours of work. I put in all the rivnuts on the passenger side, since the paint had dried. Then I went to the driver’s side of the van and cut most of the horizontal furring strips on that side. The only furring strips on the driver’s side that I didn’t cut were the very top (because I wasn’t sure about how I was going to route the Ford wiring harness that was up there) and around the driver’s side window (more on that later).

I also drilled three 1 1/2″ holes in the van walls for wire pass throughs and painted the exposed metal. As I was working on the furring strips, I was very concious of where the wires would be routed in the van walls. So, while I was making those decisions, I decided to go ahead and drill open the wire pass through holes.

It doesn’t sound like a lot, but I created a lot of sawdust. I’m happy with the day’s progress. Sorry there are no pictures, but all I could show you is a pile of cut to length lumber and dozens of rivnuts in the wall.

Tomorrow, I should receive the M6 bolts to attach the furring strips to the wall. Not sure what time they will arrive, so I’ll plan on not having them and work on other things. The first task I’ll work on tomorrow is to drill and paint the necessary holes on the driver’s side wall for the horizontal furring strips. Once the paint dries, I’ll install those rivnuts. But, the primary task I’ll work on is to use my meager carpentry skills to create a frame around the window on the driver’s side of the van. That frame will attach to the furring strips to help secure it in place. So, I need the window frame to be fabricated, so I will then know how wide to cut the furring strips around the window. Sounds complicated, and it is. Hopefully, I can share some pictures tomorrow to better explain it.
